The Foundation
The Fundação Batalha de Aljubarrota (FBA) was devised with the intent to value and dignify a part of the Portuguese cultural Heritage associated to the main battlefields in Portugal.
Over the course of over eight hundred years of Portuguese History, although there were several military confrontations within Portuguese territory with different levels of strategic and political importance, it is presently possible to identify the battles that were decisive in the creation and consolidation of Portugal, as a free and independent country.
On these battlefields, where the future of the entire nation was decided in one day alone, the courage, the effectiveness and the determination of the Portuguese secured national sovereignty forever and allowed the Portuguese to govern their own destiny.
When analyzing the History of Portugal, the battles held during the War of the Independence (1383 to 1432) and during the War of Restoration (1640 to 1668) were particularly important in the creation and consolidation of Portugal.
Therefore, the Battle of Aljubarrota Foundation considered that there are more than enough reasons that justified the recovery and valorisation of the respective battlefields, not only to facilitate the study of the facts and events of the respective periods, but also to attract the national and international public, that increasingly seek relevant historical places to visit.
The creation of the Foundation also provided two additional advantages:
- firstly, it allowed six historical locations that until 2001 were completely forgoten and abandoned, the battlefields of Atoleiros (1384), Trancoso (1385), Aljubarrota (1385), Linhas de Elvas (1659), Ameixial (1663) and Montes Claros (1665), to finally be treated in the context of their importance in the History of Portugal and in the process of the European political construction;
- secondly, and similarly to what has occoured in the majority of development countries, namely in Europe and in the U.S.A., the Foundation has made a strong contribution in the valorisation of relevant historical places, which in turn has provided the respectives regions with potential important turistic development sites.
The strategic objectives of the Battle of Aljubarrota Foundation can be summarized in the following points:
- Transmitting the importance of what happened at these historical locations to both present and future generations, namely the values related to efficiency, determination and courage that define the actions of the Portuguese.
- Recuperation and valorisation of the main battlefields associated to the creation and consolidation of Portugal.
- Historical and archaeological research of these battlefields, whenever possible in partnership with Portuguese universities, therefore enhancing their interpretation and investigation possiblities.
- Explaining, to both Portuguese and foreign public, the importance that the development and result of these battles had in the creation of the national identify of the Portuguese people.
- Opening Interpretation Centres in the refered battlefields, especially to the public on the Battles referred, especially focusing on the Interpretation Centre of the Battle of Aljubarrota.
- Recovery of the landscape of these historical sites and, whenever possible, the restoration of the vegetation that existed at the time od the battles.
- Description of the behaviour of the main figures that participated in the events.
- Attract the attention of students, by providing a detailed description of the historical events that took place in these battlefields.
- Converting the battlefields into study and research grounds.
- Organize historical re-enactments of the refered battles, preferably on the battlefields were they took place.
- Organize conferences on the History of Portugal, related to the two periods referred above.
- Cooperation with international institutions dedicated to the study and research of medieval battles, as well of battles held in the XVII century.
- Reinforce the cooperation between the Portuguese State and cultural and scientific institutions.
FBA History

The Foundation Batalha de Aljubarrota was created in March of 2002, under the initiative of Mr. António de Sommer Champalimaud. Throughout his life he always showed a great pride and love for his Country. Mr. António Champalimaud was aware of the importance of recovering the main battlefields in Portugal, and presenting them to the general public, namely to the students.
Since its creation, the Foundation developed its activity in accordance with the Law refering to the Cultural Patrimony, Law 107/01 of September 8th, which states that private entities can also contribute to the preservation and valorization of the national patrimony.
On August 5th, 2003, the Foundation was granted the Status of Public Utility, which was published on the Official Journal on August 29th, 2003.
The Foundation has always worked with IGESPAR and with the DGPC - Direcção Geral do Património Cultural, in the legal recognition and protection of six battlefields: Atoleiros (1384), Trancoso (1385), Aljubarrota (1385), Linhas de Elvas (1659), Ameixial (1663) and Montes Claros (1665). These legal recognitions are of utmost importance in assuring the preservation of these historical landscapes and its subsequent improvement.
The Foundation began its activity by recovering the battlefield of Aljubarrota. Through a Protocol established with the Ministry of Defense, in August 2003, the Foundation received authorization to transform the Military Museum into a modern Interpretation Center of the Battle of Aljubarrota. This Interpretation Center was inaugurated in October 11th, 2008.
The Protocol also stipulates that the lands belonging to the Portuguese State situated around the Interpretation Centre will be managed by the Foundation for a renewable 99 year period. The decision to transfer these lands was established in the Resolution of the Council of Ministers no. 64/2004, of 21 of May.
The Regulation Managing the Aljubarrota Battlefield was published in the II Series of the official Gazette on the 23 February 2005.
The multimedia components of the Interpretation Center were financed in 50% by the POC – Operational Programme for Culture (Programa Operacional da Cultura).
The Foundation also obtained funding from the POSC – Programa Operacional da Sociedade do Conhecimento, which financed 50% of the multimedia equipment of a second Interpretation Center, located on the first position of the Portuguese Army, during the Battle of Aljubarrota.
On the 21st of October 2004, the Foundation signed a Cooperation Protocol with the City Hall of Trancoso, to recover and develop the battlefield of Trancoso, as well as to built a future Interpretation Center of this Battle, which took place in May 29th, 1385.
On December 7th, 2004, the Foundation signed a similar Cooperation Protocol with the City Hall of Fronteira, regarding the Battle of Atoleiros, which took place on the 6 of April 1384.
On March 2007, the Foundation signed an agreement with the State Secretariat of Education, to encourage visits from all primary and secondary schools to the Interpretation Center of the Battle of Aljubarrota.
Inauguração
The Center of Interpretation of the Battle of Aljubarrota was inaugurated on October 11th, 2008.
On December 28th, 2010, the Official Journal published the Decret-Law n.º 18/2010, which states the legal recognition of the battlefield of Aljubarrota with the cathegory of "national monument". This battlefield is located in the municipalities of Porto de Mós and of Batalha.
In 2011 the Portuguese Government recognized the battlefield of Ameixial, referring to a battle that took place in 1663, as a “national monument”, through the Decree-Law n.º 16/2011, published in the Official Journal on May 25th.
In 2012 the Portuguese Government recognized the battlefield of Trancoso, referring to a battle that took place in 1385, as a “national monument”, through the Decree-Law n.º 31-D/2011. The Portuguese Government also recognized the battlefield of Montes Claros, referring to a battle that took place in 1665, as a “national monument”, through the Decree-Law n.º 31-E/2011. Both these decree-laws were published in the Official Journal of December 31st, 2012.
The protection and recovery of these battlefields have always been an essential objective of the Foundation. In effect, since 2002, the Foundation defended, at different levels, namely with the Secretary of State of Culture, with the Portuguese Army and with the respective Municipalities, the urgency of protecting these battlefields, in order to preventing its further deterioration. The classification of these battlefields, as national monuments, was a crucial first step towards its recovery, and materialized one of the main objectives of the Batalha de Aljubarrota Foundation.
The classification of the referred sites will also allow for the creation of an historical network, associated with the most important battles that took place in Portugal. These battles are associated either with the War of Independence (1383-1411), or with the War of the Restoration (1640-1667). In effect, these battlefields will be reciprocally improved, since a visit to each of them will be enriched if analyze under an integral vision of the events that took place in those periods.
The Portuguese Government implemented, in 2012, a general census to all the existing foundations in Portugal, in order to analyze their justification to receive financial and administrative public support. After the conclusion of this census, the Battle of Aljubarrota Foundation had its Stature of Public Utility renewed in 2013, through the publication, on the Official Journal, on February 28th, 2013, of the Order n. º 3203/2013. The confirmation of this stature is of great importance for the implementation of the Foundation´s activities.
On August 14th 2015, His Excellency the Minister of National Defense, Dr. José Pedro Aguiar Branco, officially opened the interpretation center of the first position of the Portuguese Army in the Battle of Aljubarrota. This building is situated 1.5 Km north of the already existing interpretation center of the Battle of Aljubarrota, and is located where the medieval Portuguese Army of Nuno Álvares Pereira stood at the beginning of this battle. From now, by visiting both centers of interpretation, it will possible to obtain a better and more complete description of how the Battle of Aljubarrota took place.

Legal Framework of the Foundation
After its recognition on December 16th, 2002, the Foundation developed its activity under the Law of the Cultural Heritage, law n.º 107/01 of September 8th. This law states that although it is a main obligation of the State the protection and development of the Portuguese cultural heritage, this task can also be achieved through the cooperation with private entities, such as foundations. It was under this legal framework that the Foundation developed its activity, accepting the task of recovering the historical place of the battlefield of Aljubarrota, as well as improving its receiving conditions for visitors. In effect, in 2002, this battlefield was practically abandoned. The Foundation also tried to this same task in relation to other important Portuguese battlefields related to the War of Independence (1383-1432), or to the War of Restoration (1640-1665).
Afterwards, in July 9th, 2012, a new law of the foundations was published, the Law n.º 24/2012, which regulates, in detail, the activities of all the foundations that operate in Portugal. SIGNATURE 1
The signature BATALHA DE ALJUBARROTA FOUNDATION is a combination of the symbol and its logo. Both elements are defined, so that their shape, color and typography can never be changed. The symbol and logo can never be used separately. Only one exception is made when the symbol is used as a decorative element.
COMPLEMENTARY SIGNATURES I
Associated with the signature FOUNDATION BATALHA OF ALJUBARROTA appeared four complementary signatures, one vertical and three horizontal. These signatures were created for specific applications, such as merchandising materials. It is only planned to use these signatures in black or white versions.
SIGNATURE VERSIONS I
Here are the versions of signature 1 in color and black and white in the positive and negative variants.
The mark of the Interpretation Center of the Battle of Aljubarrota identifies a pluridisciplinary, contemporary project on an important moment in the History of Portugal.
It is an identity that is multiplied in a variety of media: from paper stationary to store merchandising, through the screen of bi and tri-dimensional contents, to static or moving representations.
The symbolic of the Casa de Avis seemed to us appropriate as a starting point, despite the uses that the dictatorship made of them. It seemed a good time to return to your original reading. At the same time, the square and finally the banner were associated with the affirmation of the territory: the site of the event.
The P of Portugal - which is standard, but also square - and the shields of the House of Avis inside, form the mark. Serigraphic lettering, now humanist, makes the passage from the handwriting we find in the documents of the day to the typographic alphabets we use today in all the media.
The declinations of this brand will be proof of its vitality as a project of culture open to all, especially the younger.
